Hello golfers,

Tip of the week

CarolineCaroline's Tip of the week - Commit to the short pitch!

This little shot drives amateurs mad: 30 yards, over a bunker, can’t be short, can’t be long. Basically, you have to step up and hit a good shot, or you’re looking at a big number.

Given the memories of similar shots you probably have rattling around in your brain, it’s good to have a plan. For starters, take your most lofted wedge, play the ball about middle in your stance, and set a little more weight on your front foot. Then make about a half backswing, letting your wrists hinge but keeping your weight on that front foot. From there, hit down and through the ball, accelerating to the finish.

Remember, the big thing is to get over the bunker. Do NOT decelerate! If you asked me for one key to hitting this shot, I’d say, “Commit to the hit.” I see amateurs quitting at impact, afraid they’re going to launch the ball over the green, so they dump it right in the sand. Try to create a smooth tempo back and through, with a positive strike at impact.

Improving your game

Is there one bad shot that cost you more than any other last season? With the prospect of clearer weather and more golf on the horizon, allow us to share a few top tips on how to cure a common problem shot - the slice.

This shot is often caused by an 'over the top' action, in which the right shoulder starts the downswing. This throws the club outside the desired swing path on the way down, causing you to cut across the ball at impact.

As pictured in this drill, try taking your left hand off the club and move to the top of the backswing. As you start down, your left hand should stay in place. If you have a tendency to come over the top, your left hand will move towards the target.

Let your right hand release under your left and you should notice how this encourages you to remain in your posture through the impact area - essential for good ball striking. Try repeating this drill until it starts to feel natural, and then hit some shots.
