Welcome to the latest edition of our newsletter. In this week’s mail, we compare today's drivers to the big sticks of yesteryear, look at how layering has become so important out on the course and cast our eye over one of the changes to the Rules of Golf which come into effect in 2019.

Competition news

Ladies results

Firstly, huge congratulations to Elaine Kimber our ladies captain and the ladies section on winning the Gilleson Cup at Eaton this weekend. They won in spectacular fashion on the first extra hole. It is a great achievement to win Norfolk’s premier ladies team competition again for the 3rd time.

Scratch League

Commiserations go out to our Scratch league team who lost in the semi-finals last weekend at Richmond Park. It was a great effort to get that far and hopefully they can go one step further next year and reach the final.

Dunston Hall Ryder Cup

Also congratulations to team USA captained by John Rix who won our first version of the Dunston Hall Ryder cup by one point against Europe captained by James Flesher, with the final score ending Europe 11.5 – 12.5 USA.

Many thanks to all the members who took part and fought for the cup.

Tour news

Hatton crumbles

It was back to the daily grind for Europe’s Ryder Cup heroes, with Tyrrell Hatton and Tommy Fleetwood both in action at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship. Hatton led in the final round by four strokes heading into the back nine, but a remarkable collapse involving four bogies saw him card a level par 72, allowing Denmark’s Lucas Bjerregarrd to steal victory at St Andrews. Fleetwood shared second with Hatton as a final day 69 left him on 14 under, one stroke behind Bjerregarrd. This week the tour heads to Walton Heath with Justin Rose playing host at the British Masters.

Rule changes

As 2019 comes ever closer, so too do the new Rules of Golf which are to be implemented on 1st January 2019. The changes being made are intended to modernise the game, one of which is the dropping procedure. Drops will no longer have to be made from shoulder height – instead, golfers will be able to drop from knee height when taking relief to simplify the dropping process and speed up play.

New from Titleist

Titleist have dropped a few new products over the past few weeks and we have both in stock!

We are now stocking the new premium low spin golf ball from Titleist called the AVX at only £40 a dozen.

We also have both of the new offerings from Titleist in the driver and fairway wood categories. These are the TS2 and TS3 models which are designed to improve your distance without sacrificing accuracy which we know all of our members have!

The driver’s retail at £449 and the fairway woods are for sale for £269.

Do you need new spikes?

Winter brings with it rain, which makes the ground beneath your feet softer and more slippery. If your spikes are worn or even missing, keeping a stable base during your swing will be much harder and you'll be more prone to slipping. The good old days

Sometimes it's nice to reminisce about the good times. When it comes to golf, the days of persimmon woods, small clubheads and hitting balls which were hard as a rock are long gone - but it can help to take a trip down memory lane to remind us of just how much technology has developed, particularly in the case of drivers.

Time tunnel

Take Callaway for example; you might have been lucky enough to own its iconic Fusion FT-3 driver way back in 2005. The FT-3 featured 'fusion technology' - essentially it combined an ultra-hot titanium cup face with a super light carbon composite body, making for a club which delivered serious distance off the tee. It's definitely a collector's item thanks to its bright orange shaft, and is sure to be remembered with fondness.

Fast-forward to the present day, and Callaway has released its most technologically advanced driver to date in the form of Rogue. The Rogue has a Triaxial Carbon Crown, giving the player more forgiveness with every tee shot. Its weight has been redistributed into the head's perimeter to preserve distance and direction on off-centre hits, meaning this club is sure to be a favourite for years to come.

So, whilst it is nice to think about your first ever driver, it's probably time to get up to speed with the latest models such as the Rogue. Who knows? Maybe in another 10 years time, you'll be looking back on the Rogue with as much fondness as the FT-3!

How times have changed

Remember when you used to get ready for a round of golf during winter - you'd put on your vest, followed by a turtleneck, followed by a polo, then a jumper, before finally putting on your jacket. Not only was it a complete pain in terms of trying to stay warm without overheating, but it also made swinging the club near impossible - not a great combination if you wanted to enjoy your 18 holes.

Luckily, we've come a long way since then and we're now able to wear golf-specific garments which are not only comfortable, but also designed to keep your movement as natural as possible. So, instead of donning 5 or 6 layers during your round of golf, all you'll need is three.
