Greetings from The Golf Team
Dunston Hall - Golf Team

Greetings golfers,

We would like to inform our readers that the TrackMan is coming to Dunston Hall very soon! So please keep your eyes peeled over the upcoming weeks.

Nick's top tip of the week

I get many golfers coming through the door complaining how their trolley has broken and they need to replace it. This occurs with many of the cheaper trollies that are priced between £30-£60. So my tip is to invest a bit more money and get a quality so you won't have to get a new one in a year's time, which will ultimately make this a sound investment.

The Motocaddy M1 Push trolley is by far one of the best out there:

Introduced last year as part of the compact-folding M-Series range, the smooth-running M1 Lite pushed the boundaries of manual trolleys with its combination of performance-led features.

'Compact but sturdy, easy to put together and you immediately feel like you can trust it,' was the verdict of National Club Golfer magazine in awarding the M1 Lite the Gold Award in a test involving eight of the latest push models.

The exclusive twin-tube frame and triple-hinge system allows the M1 Lite to fold down to less than half the size of an S-Series push model. Oversize wheels, a foot-operated parking brake, plus an insulated food/beverage pouch and integrated Accessory Station provide exceptional value and convenience.

Ideal for the Space-conscious golfers looking for a technical push trolley

Sam's top tip of the week

The odd wayward drive will do just as much damage to your confidence as to your scorecard. For the majority of amateurs I play with, the ability to drive the ball in the fairway consistently would save them more than just a few shots every round. To do this requires the sort of fundamentals both at address and through the swing that will help you strike the ball with good speed and from the very centre of the clubface. Once you have mastered these key points, you need a sensible strategy that will ease you into a state of nerveless focus. What follows is my essential guide to splitting more fairways, more often.

Strong Foundations

The vast majority of bad shots that golfers hit can be traced back to faults at the address position. This is the reason we work so hard to get the set-up spot on. Here are the keys to the driver address and a swing that delivers power just when you need it.

When to Add Power

It might sound a little strange, but knowing how to hit a big drive can also teach you a lot about control. The point is that throwing yourself at the ball does not work on any level. I've hit shots on Trackman to see what effect throwing myself into the shot has and the numbers clearly show that you only end up losing the efficiency of the swing. While the clubhead speed through impact might be good, the ball speed usually isn't. You end up compromising both your distance and accuracy.

The key to hitting straight drives that are also long is to turn on the power at the last moment. Don't go snatching at it from the top; this will only cause you to spin out of the shot, creating a slice. Let the transition from backswing to downswing be smooth, helping you get into a good delivery position so you can rotate with speed. Allow the club to drop into position and then rotate quickly through the ball. Accuracy and power go hand-in-hand, and this is the key move to master.

Think Smart - Setting the right technique to hit ball after ball at the target on the range is one thing, but taking it to the course, under competition conditions, is something else completely. This is where a good strategy and a clear mind come in. My technique for hitting the fairway under pressure will hopefully help you too.

Fine Lines

A great tip for hitting straight drives is to pick a very small target in the distance. As I stand behind the ball, I'll pick something at eye level (I don't want my target to be too high or too low). In this instance, there is a small tree in the distance, the branches of which are the perfect target. Once I'm set over the ball, I look up once to ensure I'm perfectly aligned to that point before making a positive, committed move. This is a great tactic, particularly for tight tee shots as narrowing your focus will also help you block out the trouble. By concentrating on where you do want to hit it and not where you don't, you'll ?be far more likely to find a positive outcome.

Use The Space

There is usually plenty of space between the tee markers, and knowing exactly where to peg up can have a huge effect on your accuracy. Remember this simple rule: tee up on the same side as the trouble. If there is water or trees on the right, for instance, tee up on the right side of the box and you'll be aiming away from the danger. For those who are confident in the quality of their ball-striking, it's worth aiming away from the trouble and shaping the ball back. So if the danger ?is down the right I will often aim up the left and look to hit a little fade.

Repeat the Process

It is worth reinstating the idea that repeating the same pre-shot routine is the best way of coping with pressure. A good routine will help you feel comfortable and confident, physically and mentally preparing you for the shot you're about to play. I make a couple of practice swings standing behind the ball, visualising the shot I want to hit. Whether it's a draw, a fade or a stock shot, I'll visualise the flight I want. I then stand over the ball, take a look at the target and start my swing. As long as you commit 100% to the strategy you have set, your accuracy stats will be your strength.

Driver Recommendations

Titleist 915 D2

Hit more fairways with the maximum distance and forgiveness of the 915D2. The 460cc pear profile provides confidence and stability. 915D2 delivers higher launch and more dynamic face closure compared to the D3.

Titleist 915 D3

Workable and forgiving, the 915D3 driver delivers distance with trajectory control. The 440cc deep face pear profile provides confidence to manage your trajectory. 915D3 produces a lower flight and less spin in comparison to the D2.
